We cheered at our first game last Tuesday! Even though the both the 7th and 8th grade football teams lost to Manor New Tech, the girls did a great job supporting our teams even with hecklers from the visitors, and the fact that the bench for our team was on the wrong side of the field and the scoreboard was not working properly. We are still missing physicals for three girls. Even though the girls without physicals must come to the game, they are not allowed to participate without them. (UIL rules) Our next game is not until September 26th, so get those done and turned in to Coach Valentine before then. We have practices Monday through Thursday every week unless one of the coaches sends a text saying that we don't. Being on time and properly dressed is a must. Demerits and extra conditioning have already been assigned for those that missed, were late, or not dressed properly. Can you believe we have already been in school for three weeks!!! That means that it is grade check time. All grade check forms must be truned in no later than Monday, September 18. A great big thank you goes out to our parents!!! You are an amazing support system. We appreciate the waters, gatorades, and snacks that you provided for camps and the first game. Keep up the awesome work. Also, anytime you volunteer to help us out or take pictures during events, make sure that Mary De La Cruz (Head Cheer Mom) and Rebecca Gomez (OMS Parent Liason) have a record of your volunteer hours! this helps us get more money for cheer and our school. On Tuesday, May 30, 2017, OMS Gator Cheer will be greeters for the 8th grade Awards Cermony. The girls will be staying after school with Coach Valentine having their final meeting of the 2016-2017 school year and preparing to help get the 8th grade ceremony started. Parents are asked to be at Ojeda by 5:45 p.m. to pick up their cheerleader since there will be no busses running. Please go over the camp schedule below to ensure correct drop-off and pick-up times. Cheerleaders will be given a copy of the schedule and what to bring during their final meeting on Tuesday. Last night OMS Gator Cheer had their first parent meeting for the new team. I would like to thank those parents and cheerleaders who came to the meeting.
At the meeting, cheerleaders (and parents) were given their own cheer binders with copies the OMS Gator Cheer Handbook, DVISD Athletic Handbook, Academic Policy, Attendance Policy, and our Mission Statement. Cheerleaders and parents also filled out electronic required district and campus athletic forms, as well as receiving forms for required physicals and information on the DVISD Physical Clinic being done at Ojeda on May 16. The parents in attendance displayed an enthusiasm and desire to work together as a team and with the coaches to make this an amazing year for OMS Gator Cheer. Meet the Coaches Night is scheduled for Thursday, April 27, 2017, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, at OMS in room 510. Cheerleaders are encouraged to bring their parents to meet the new Coaches, get important information, and provide input and suggestions for the upcoming cheer year.
This year's summer calendar which includes two mini camps and a sign painting day has been approved. OMS Gator Cheer will have a three day mini camp the beginning of June to get them started on conditioning, adapting to the Texas heat, and of course cheers, chants, and dances, for the girls to practice over the summer. In mid July, the team will get together to check their individual progress on their splits and their proficiency with the cheer materials they were taught in June. The team will also be painting spirit signs to be used throughout the school year. In early August, the team will again meet for camp. The August mini camp will be to review materials taught in June and prepare the team for their first performance.
OMS Band directors and cheer coaches are working together to put together a special event for back to school. Stay tuned for more information. On March 8, 2017, the 6th and 7th graders that will make up the OMS Gator Cheer Team for the 2017-2018 school year meet with the Varsity Uniforms representative to get fitted for their uniforms for the upcoming school year.
